The stack is now empty, so there are no additional items to resolve. To “counter” a spell or ability means to send it (from the stack) to the graveyard and cancel its effects. So in our example, the Cancel was the most recently added spell. As you can see in this image, the stack uses a First-In, Last-Out pattern, meaning the first spell or ability that was added to the stack will always be the final item to resolve-and the most recently added spell or ability will be the first to resolve. Neither player has any additional responses, so it’s time to resolve the first item. Player Two casts Cancel by paying its mana cost, choosing a target spell to counter, then adding it to the stack on top of the Swiftclaw. Player One casts Oreskos Swiftclaw by paying its mana cost and adding it to the stack-because it is on the stack, it has not yet resolved and entered the battlefield-then Player One passes priority to Player Two.
